Look, I get it, Lebron James is the best basketball player alive and playing professionally right now. I even wrote about him last week giving a clear point and opinion as to why you have to consider him in the GOAT discussions and cut him his well-deserved slack. But now and after what has been going down in this series I can’t help but think about why we aren’t talking so much about Kevin Durant as we should be. Yes, Durant is all over the sports news everywhere based upon his dominance throughout this series but yet it comes to my attention that in this fourth installment of the Warriors vs. Cavs NBA Finals showdown after talking until it hurts about Lebron, our next person in the subject should definitely be Kevin Durant.
Sure, Durant gets a lot of hate still for “selling out” and going to a “super team” but come on people, we really need to give all that crap talk an end. Durant has proven he has the chops to be considered the best all-around player in the league, after tweaking his defensive skills a bit. It’s not like he became this good once he started playing with Curry and Thompson next to him. May I remind you that this man used to share the court with Westbrook and Harden in OKC and yet even with Russell there we all knew who the real MVP for the Thunder was. If you need any further proof think of this, we didn’t really start to talk about Russell Westbrook’s stupid greatness really until after he was left alone and Durant had left. In a team where he is surrounded by some of the best players in their positions and led by one of the best coaches in the NBA recently, he is just doing him and it’s working quite alright.
A problem here is we just like the Warriors itself have grown up to think that this is Steph Curry’s team and sure you could have a good case for stating that but the numbers don’t lie. Durant coming to this team put them over the top of any real competition in the league. What did the Rockets have to do this year? Go after Chris Paul and apply the exact same tactics Golden State used when signing Durant to try and even up. The same goes to Oklahoma with Paul George and Carmelo Anthony and yet where are the Rockets and Thunder at? Oh yeah, they’re at home watching Durant and the Warriors absolutely dominate Lebron’s Cavs.
Kevin Durant has been going to town against the Cavs this series and at points, it looks like Golden State’s other stars are playing catch up to match up to the stellar numbers and performances KD has been putting up. Again, playing in a team where you share the line up with Curry, Thompson and Green only help him play better basketball but still Durant at times seems to be playing a game of his own.
So what is this game Durant is playing on his own? Simple, it’s a game where he has to try and outdo himself every game to be able to shut down all the bull$&!t talked around about him going to the Warriors. He might not even feel it but his career after going to the coast has become a non-stop race to prove himself worthy of turning opinions around. The man has the respect of every single player in the league, Westbrook included so why continue to bitch about him instead of noticing and recognizing that this man is as good as or even better than most people give him credit for.
So what if he fled Oklahoma for Golden State? He saw an opportunity to achieve everything he wants in his career and he took it. He is doing his own to make sure fans get what they are expecting and he is making the Warriors an even better team if that’s possible. Lebron left Cleveland for Miami to do exactly the same thing. If people bitched but they let it go soon, why can’t they do the same with Kevin Durant? There’s no difference here, there’s just a bunch of bitchy people with bitchy attitudes who can’t recognize talent wherever it goes and plays. Kevin Durant is that good of a player, he was in OKC and he is in Golden State, get over it, enjoy his playing and be done with it.
