Man, hating on the Los Angeles Lakers is fun. It’s like hating on the Yankees or the Cowboys, no matter what they do, who they sign or whatever there’s always room for heckling. I still remember how all Laker fans got the biggest “we´re back” boners when Lebron James signed with them in the off season. Yes, everyone thought that by now the “King” would’ve made this team into a contender. I don’t know in which right mind making this Lakers squad a contender for the Western Conference Championship was a true reality. I mean, the Warriors and Rockets are in the same conference, just that is enough to make anyone doubt themselves of their capacities. Still they had faith in Lebron, and who wouldn’t, he is the best basketball player in the world and can make any sucky team good, right Cavs? Well the experiment in L.A. is basically over, the Lakers are more likely to not make the playoffs as every day goes by and some changes should be coming in the purple and gold direction. So, what should happen in order for the Lakers to stop sucking?
1. First of all, and the absolutely most important thing here, the Lakers need to keep Lebron James no matter what. We are talking about a guy that has been to all of the last eight NBA Finals in the past 8 years. The only other part of the finals that has been there all along are the balls. So, if the Lakers want to continue with their idea of making this team a winning squad again Lebron James has to stay. Magic Johnson and Rob Palinka need to wrap their heads around the idea that if Lebron is not happy anything can happen. I’m not saying he will bounce and join, I don’t know, the Knicks for example but if I were the Lakers front office right now, I would be making sure Lebron is as comfortable as possible as he heads into an offseason where he will be watching the playoffs from home.
2. Secondly, they need to gear up with all stars again. The Lakers have never been a team of nobodies. Everybody has always known who plays for the Lakers because that’s part of the L.A. stigma. Jerry West, Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Magic Johnson, James Worthy, Shaq, Kobe, you name them, they’ve worn the purple and gold. They did the best move they could do by getting Lebron James but signing guys like Lance Stephenson, who I won’t lie, I can’t say I hate, he’s amusing, Rajon Rondo who is more like a washed-up version of a street ball thug and Javale McGee who is, well, who is he? The free agent market this coming off season will be one full of great material, since Kyrie apparently made up with Lebron during the NBA All-Star Weekend he could be a great addition to the LA team. Since we’re on that note, finally landing Anthony Davis could also be a move to make everyone in the Western Conference shake and tremble. Also, the Lakers need to understand the value in their younger players and give them more of a protagonist role, yes, in any Lebron James team everyone else will be a backup singer but you know, Lebron won’t be there forever.
3. Lastly, the Luke Walton experiment has failed. It’s time to come to terms with it. The idea of landing the young coach with fresh ideas to bring the team back up was cool, in paper at least but the Lakers have always been a win now team. With win now teams you need coaches who know and understand what this takes. Luke Walton doesn’t understand that clearly. Maybe a few years coaching in college would be a good idea, it has been thrown around that UCLA would be looking to land him if he gets the axe from LA so at least he would be able to stay in California. A guy like Eric Spoelstra is in my opinion the absolute best fit for this job. He could use a new break after having a more than fitting coaching career in Miami. He knows what it’s like to coach a Lebron James based team and make it as successful as could be and all and all he’s a cool guy, exactly what the Lakers need.
The Lakers suck, they’ve been sucking for the last few seasons, they should stop sucking. It’s something that’s needed for the sport. In order for there to be order in the world, the teams everyone loves to hate needs to be on winning ways making the hate that much stronger and better, so if the Lakers do the right thing, we should be able to hate them for the right reasons starting next season.
